I don't see how using wine is worse than a proprietary binary (other than not being counted as a Linux user as you say).

I ended up mostly just using Windows (offline), both for convenience and to limit the amount of proprietary software I use on my main system. Of course, even better would be using python or something like that, which some games do and should work fine for Amanita games. net and can be run more directly with mono or dotnet. I don't mind using it and it seems to have much better compatability over time. Wine is complex but at least it is open source.

It works for me on 1920x1080 (not sure if that would still work full screen if I got the Linux binary to run). It might be possible to work around the 4k issue by temporarily setting a display scale. Someone in the forum got Botanicula to work on Ubuntu 18.04 by installing some extra libraries. There have been some attempts at open source flash players, but I'm not sure if any of them are far enough to play games. JMB9: I agree open source engines are the best. It may scale with numbers of sold versions - and I have the impression that no one really count Linux - and I am sure all games I purchased to use it officially with an OSE are Windows counts - and I don't use Windows. I have never seen that the original Windows game can compete with the Linux version if that is using an Open Source Engine (OSE) - it is much harder to see this advantage for proprietary games, though. So as I would not buy on Steam - I also would not run a Windows binary.Īnd there are Linux 'ports' which don't deserve that name. I know that you have good intentions - this is not meant to insult you.īut Steam spoiled the situation when giving the impression that Windows SW runs good enough on Linux so one does not need a Linux port. I understand using DOSBox, but emulating/layering Windows syscalls to Linux ones is wird - and something different.

I am allway astonished that people want to get rid of all advantages just by using Wine/Proton. I am a Unix expert and want to use GNU/Linux SW - if I would like to use a Windows binary I would use Windows - and this is not what I would ever do. I would buy all Amanita titles if they would work on Linux (out of the box). so currently I would doubt that the engine problemsĪre even tackled let alone being solved for other titles than Pilgrim - otherwise there is no reason to not answer.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to play their games with Adobe's Projector (standalone version of the browser plugins),Īs they would be still available in 64 bit for all platforms and no security updates would not be that big deal for a game.Īdditionally Amanita Design is not responsive.
